Meet the LTSS Center Team at the LeadingAge Annual Meeting

LTSS Center team members will present five sessions at the 2022 LeadingAge Annual Meeting & EXPO. They will also support the conference’s Leaders of Color Network Program.


Five sessions at the 2022 LeadingAge Annual Meeting & EXPO will explore studies conducted by researchers at the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston. In addition, the LTSS Center is working closely with the LeadingAge Leaders of Color Network Advisory Board to host conference events designed for emerging, mid-level, and senior leaders of color at LeadingAge member organizations.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

The Future of Aging Services: Diverse Leaders of Tomorrow (27-A)

Sunday, October 16, 1 p.m.

Get in touch with the younger generation of professionals in the field of aging services. Listen as they describe how they were introduced to the aging services field and how their understanding of the field has changed over time. Join LTSS Center team member Christy Kramer and presenters who will share their thoughts on how to bridge the gap between aging services providers and students or new graduates, and the role that up-and-coming minority individuals can play in aging services organizations.

Advancing Leadership Diversity through Strategic Partnerships (36-G)

Tuesday, October 18, 11 a.m.

Strategic partnerships play a critical role in supporting the recruitment and retention of a diverse group of leaders in the field of aging services. Join LTSS Center team members Robyn StoneAdrienne Ruffin, and Natasha Bryant for this session, which will show you how these partnerships work, the successes they’ve achieved, and the potential they hold. LeadingAge provider members will be on hand to describe how partnerships with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) are helping their organizations increase diversity. Presenters will also describe LeadingAge initiatives to improve racial and ethnic diversity in mid- and upper-level positions: a partnership with UNCF, the largest minority education organization in the U.S.; the HBCUs-LTSS Careers Initiative; and the Leaders of Color Network.

RECRUITMENT, RETENTION & CULTURE

Turnover Intent and Job Satisfaction in Nursing Homes (131-C)

Sunday, October 16, 4:30 p.m.

Nursing homes faced an unprecedented crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic, including high turnover among direct care professionals at a time when those caregivers were needed the most. At the height of the pandemic, the LTSS Center conducted two studies to determine factors associated with job satisfaction and intent to leave the job among 809 direct care professionals working in nursing homes around the country. During this session, researchers Verena CimarolliNatasha Bryant, and Robyn Stone will share findings from those studies and outline steps nursing home employers can take to increase job satisfaction and decrease turnover intent among direct care professionals during any public health crisis.

POLICY, COMPLIANCE & LEGAL ISSUES

State and Federal Initiatives to Finance Long-Term Services and Supports (120-D)

Monday, October 17, 11 a.m.

The growing need for long-term services and supports (LTSS) poses significant challenges to individuals and governments. This session will document the federal government’s continuing failure to tackle these challenges. LTSS Center researchers Marc CohenEdward Miller, and Eileen Tell will review six state initiatives designed to establish social insurance programs to finance LTSS. They will describe a national “catastrophic” public and “front-end” private insurance approach exemplified by the WISH Act, and will share lessons that government officials, consumer advocates, and LTSS providers can use to spur LTSS financing efforts in their states and nationally.

PERSON-CENTERED WELL-BEING

Housing-Based Services: Impact on Health and Well-Being (106-F)

Monday, October 17, 4:30 p.m.

Right Care, Right Place, Right Time (R3), a housing plus services program in Massachusetts, features two on-site wellness teams that coordinate a package of enhanced services for residents of five affordable senior housing communities. During this session, LTSS Center researchers Marc Cohen and Edward Miller will draw on their evaluation of the R3 program to highlight the potential role service-enriched housing can play in improving health, quality of life, and access to health-related services and supports among older residents of affordable housing. Presenters will also explore the potential of service-enriched housing to reduce healthcare costs.

LEADERS OF COLOR NETWORK PROGRAM

The Leaders of Color Network Program will provide LeadingAge members, including emerging, mid-level, and senior leaders of color, with opportunities to hear from thought leaders across our field on key topics, network with executives and people of color, and build a community of colleagues. Emerging, mid-level, and senior leaders of color are invited to apply for one of 20 Leaders of Color Conference Registration Scholarships, provided by Connect RN, to cover individual registration. (Scholarships do not cover hotel accommodations or airfare.)

Sunday, October 16, 11 a.m.

Attend this panel event featuring Dr. Erika James, dean of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and other leaders of color from LeadingAge member communities. The panelists will discuss management strategy and crisis leadership.

Leaders of Color Business Meeting

Monday, October 17, 1 p.m.

Members of the Leaders of Color Network will meet in person for the first time during this business meeting facilitated by Karen Gipson, chair, and Moniqua Costa, vice chair, of the Leaders of Color Network Advisory Board. The meeting will feature discussions about the purpose and structure of the Leaders of Color Network, future activities and events, and efforts to create a database of the network members.

Leaders of Color Networking Events

Monday, October 17, and Tuesday, October 18, 5:30 p.m.

These networking events for leaders of color will provide opportunities to meet and connect with colleagues who are working in aging services across the country. Come and share best practices and ideas for developing a diverse pipeline of LTSS leaders.
