Tuition Savings Available for Employees of LeadingAge Members

By Steve Syre

UMass Boston offers special price breaks to LeadingAge member employees for online graduate-level Management of Aging Services programs.

Employees of LeadingAge members can become eligible for special savings of up $2,400 when they enroll in online graduate-level gerontology programs at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The application deadline for the spring semester is Dec. 1.

The tuition savings offer is a benefit of the ongoing partnership between LeadingAge and UMass Boston. The organizations first collaborated in 2017 to create the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston.

DETAILS OF THE TUITION SAVINGS OFFER

Lower tuition prices apply to LeadingAge member employees who enroll in Management of Aging Services (MAS) programs offered by the UMass Boston Gerontology Department, including the MAS track leading to an MS in Gerontology degree, or a 5-course Graduate Certificate in Gerontology.

The regular price of both the master’s and certificate programs is $575 per credit, or $1,725 per course. The special offer to employees of LeadingAge members reduces the cost of each class by $200, to $1,525. An online master’s student can lower total tuition costs by up to $2,400. The maximum reduction for a student in the certificate program is $1,000.

“The offer to employees of LeadingAge members is a great opportunity to advance their careers and save some money at the same time,” said Ellen Birchander, the gerontology graduate program director at UMass Boston.

PROGRAM DETAILS

UMass Boston’s Management of Aging Services master’s degree is uniquely designed for aging services professionals, and is also one of the most affordable online master’s degrees of any kind.

The fully online master’s program provides a strong foundation in:

  • Program development and management.
  • Psychology of aging.
  • Organizational finance.
  • Environment and technology.
  • Resource management.
  • Long-term services and supports.

The master’s degree is awarded after the successful completion of 9 required courses and 3 electives, as well as a Capstone project on the student’s area of interest. Synchronous chats between students and instructors on a weekly or bi-weekly basis encourage student engagement and maximize networking opportunities.

Many part-time students complete their studies in less than 3 years. It is possible for a full-time student to complete the degree in 2 years.

The 5-course Graduate Certificate program is ideal for professionals working in aging services who have an interest in the study of gerontology and want to test the program before pursuing a master’s degree. The certificate program is also suited for students seeking to enhance their knowledge of the impacts of an aging society.

“Both of these programs were designed with busy working people in mind,” said Birchander. “They allow students to set their own schedules and advance at their own pace.”
